Asthma & Pulmonology

Asthma is a disease that makes breathing difficult for more than 23 million Americans. Management of this chronic condition is critical in helping people breath easier.

At Truman Medical Centers, our focus in asthma care is broad and includes striving for excellence in all areas where patients with asthma are encountered. Our goal is to provide superior and consistent care for the patient with asthma whether it is in the Emergency Department, inpatient unit, clinic setting, research or the community. All of these systems strive together to assure that our patients suffering from this frightening disease receive optimal care, support and education based on nationally and internationally accepted guidelines for the care of the patient with asthma.

TMC Hospital Hill is home to the area’s American Lung Association Asthma Clinical Research Center (ACRC), an elite network of 18 not-for-profit clinical research centers dedicated to asthma treatment research, attracting some of the best asthma investigators worldwide. The ACRC Network conducts large clinical trials that will have a direct impact on patient care and asthma treatment.

In 2001, TMC instituted a comprehensive asthma program that provides asthma education to outpatients and inpatients. In an effort to provide a consistent continuum of care, patients are treated in the emergency department using a standardized protocol based on national guidelines for the management of asthma and are referred for follow-up care to help break the cycle of emergent care. This program has resulted in a substantial reduction in admissions for asthma sufferers.
