Truman Medical Center dietitians reviewed menus at several popular area
restaurants in the Kansas City area and marked found items that were low in
fat and calories and high in nutrients. These items are marked TMC-approved
- great meals you can enjoy without the guilt!
Below is the list of restaurants participating in the program, along with
a description of their TMC-approved menu items:

Ike & Tuna.
A dynamic pairing of Ahi tuna steak & wasabi mashed potatoes served with
grilled veggies.
Spice up your meal with this pick. Ahi tuna is jam-packed with omega-3
fatty acids for your heart and B vitamins for energy. Wasabi heats things up
to keep portions down and a side of grilled veggies rounds out this meal.

Roasted Beet Salad.
Red and yellow beats, apples, frisee, goat cheese, toasted pistachios
and apple cider vinaigrette.
Pump up your immune system with this salad choice. Beets are very high in
antioxidants, especially the ones that help maintain eye and nerve health.
Paired with the dark leafy greens of the frisee and the pistachios this
salad is a choice full of good health.

Sizzling grilled onions, bell peppers and zucchini served with a side of
sour cream, pico de gallo, rice and frijoles de la hoya (beans from the
pot), Served with flour or corn tortillas.
Go veggie and still enjoy one of your favorite Mexican dishes. By
eliminating the steak you’ll save up to 280 calories (6 oz), 8 grams of fat
and about 130 grams of cholesterol, which is almost 50% of your daily
cholesterol needs. Go easy on the sour cream and replace the refried beans
with the frijoles de la hoya. By doing this you will not only reduce the
overall calorie and fat content of the meal it’s a great way to get more
fiber in the meal as well, which can help with naturally lowering
cholesterol and helping you feel fuller faster.

Mexican shrimp cocktail mixed in a spicy tomato based chilled soup with
diced avocados, pico de gallo, celery, salt and pepper served in a jumbo
cocktail glass with crackers.
This is one healthy cocktail! Tomatoes are full of antioxidants and
vitamin C while the shrimp are a low fat lean protein. The avocado is packed
with heart healthy monounsaturated fats, fiber and vitamin E.

Baked chicken or Blackened Salmon with one side.
Sides: cabbage, broccoli or collard greens.
Bake and save! Choosing baked chicken over fried chicken can cut the fat
grams in half and save at least 100 calories. Take an extra step to remove
the skin and you’ll save even more cholesterol and fat. Pairing the chicken
with a cruciferous vegetable will fill you up with vitamins K, A and C,
antioxidants to fight cancer while keeping your waist line trim.
Salmon is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3's help with proper
brain function and may help reduce the risk of heart disease. By skipping a
one cup serving of dressin' you can save a whopping 350 calories, 15 grams
of fat and more than half you daily needs in sodium.
