The
Level One Trauma Center at Truman Medical Center Hospital Hill consists of a
team of medical professionals specially trained in treating trauma and
critical care injuries. Trauma surgeons and other members of the trauma team
are in the hospital 24-hours a day, seven days a week.
Paramedics transport
injury victims meeting special triage criteria to the waiting trauma team,
composed of trauma surgeons, emergency physicians, trained trauma nurses and
personnel from radiology and other critical departments. Physicians in
specialties ranging from neurosurgery to OB/GYN are on standby, and nursing
teams are ready in the operating room and critical care unit as well. In
addition to patient care, Level One Trauma Centers conduct research
programs, healthcare provider education, community outreach
programs, and is
a referral resource for communities in nearby regions.
The Emergency Department (ED) provides care for approximately 69,000
patients per year in a 52-bed unit, (including three trauma rooms), the ED
serves as the intake, assessment and resuscitation site for the
Level One Trauma Center, and provides clinical and
administrative support for the city's Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner program
and BRIDGE domestic violence advocacy program.
