John Dane Receives Distinguished Service Award from Mo. Dental Association
November 13, 2014. – Dr. John Dane, Truman Medical Center (TMC) Lakewood Dental Director, was named the 2014 Missouri Dental Association (MDA) Distinguished Service Award winner at the Association’s House of Delegates hosted November 7 in Jefferson City.
The Distinguished Service Award is presented to a member with a long history of exemplary service and dedication to the dental profession and organized dentistry. Dr. Dane exemplifies service by devoting almost his entire career toward working with the indigent and geriatric patients as well as his devotion to education.
As the dental director at TMC Lakewood, not only is he leading a team of dental providers in treating the sick and disadvantaged, but he also is in charge of the residency program with 5-6 graduate students. He has spent 36 years educating thousands of students through the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Dentistry. He has been instrumental in providing hospital-based dental care while providing residents with extensive experience most dental programs could not provide. Along with these responsibilities, Dr. Dane also runs three mobile dental units with eight staff members.
Treating the geriatric population always has been a passion for Dr. Dane. For almost ten years, Dr. Dane was the chief dental consultant for Swope Ridge Geriatric Center in Kansas City. He also has been a staff member at John Knox Village Care Center in Lee’s Summit. He is a member of the American Society for Geriatric Dentistry and the Academy of Dentistry for the Handicapped.
Dr. Dane, a 1975 graduate of the UMKC School of Dentistry, has set a high example of performance and integrity as a dental professional and as an advocate and supporter of organized dentistry for 36 years. He has taught numerous continuing education courses and has co-authored works on community health and specialty care programs for both the ADA and the MDA. He continues to provide consulting services for both the ADA’s Councils on Education and Accreditation.
Founded in 1865, the MDA is a non-profit, professional organization that is a state component of a tripartite association where its members belong to the American Dental Association and their local component society. Primary activities include legislative representation, continuing education, dental health and numerous membership benefits including professional services and insurance programs.
